4 Sticking with graphite, add more detail to the water’s surface. I started “roping off” small sections that I could fill with darker shading. At this stage, I held my pencil at a sharper angle to the page to allow the individual pencil strokes to be seen here and there. I also took a fresh pencil eraser and used it as a kind of drawing tool: erasing back to the white of the paper in tiny, contained areas that the viewer’s eye would see as bits of foam.

5 Now take out the black colored pencil and bring parts of the water’s surface to a deeper level of darkness. In one area, I wanted to convey the look of a cresting wave with sunlight pouring through it. For that part, I made sure the shading was supersmooth, just as the water would be at such a time. In other areas, my colored pencil work was more linear—composed mostly of lines—helping to convey choppy, rough seas.
